Angelo State, Tampa still battle atop the DII baseball Power 10 rankings

Tampa wins the 2024 DII baseball championship

Tampa won. Angelo State won. There is no less clarity in the most tightly contested DII baseball Power 10 rankings in perhaps the existence of these rankings. While we are getting closer to the regional rankings and , the top 15 look relatively the same as last week.

Young Harris is the big change, making its 2025 debut at No. 10 after some impressive wins lately, but more on that in a few. The below Power 10 rankings are not a simple equation based solely on metrics, nor is it voted upon by a body of people in the game. It is a combination of both, weighing what is happening on the field with what is happening on paper. Your weekly disclaimer: To rank DII baseball teams, you have to look beyond wins and losses — DII college baseball season is the longest of any sport. It ends after softball and spans five months, with most teams playing four to five games a week. Expecting a team to sweep every weekend is simply irrational.

The DII baseball Power 10 rankings (Week ending April 13)

No. 1 (tied) Angelo State, Tampa | Previous: 1 (tied)

Angelo State had a four-game series against West Texas A&M, which was receiving votes in all three national polls. Tampa had a three-game series against a Rollins team that also appeared in all three national polls, as high as No. 22 in the NCBWA. Both teams crushed their opponents, leaving a tie at the top once again.

The Rams are clicking, now with consecutive series wins over teams around the national rankings. Arguably the best run-scoring offense in DII (No. 2 in total runs and No. 3 in runs per game) closed the weekend by scoring 42 runs against a top-30 team. Tampa swept Rollins and scored double-digit runs in two of the three games. The gap in the South Region is more like a chasm between No. 1 Tampa and everyone else. In the South Central, Angelo State is closing the gap between itself and UT Tyler, and another weekend sweep should see them right back at the top of the region.

No. 3 Central Missouri | Previous: No. 3. It was another big weekend for the Mules. Despite dropping a midweek-er against Washburn, they swept nationally ranked Central Oklahoma. , the Mules finally overtook Minnesota State for the No. 1 spot in the Central Region, and , they have the top KPI in the region as well. The Mules have played three teams in the regional rankings conversation over the past three weekends — and are 8-1 to show for it.

No. 4 North Greenville| Previous: No. 4. The Trailblazers have now won 12 in a row, which includes key Southeast Region victories over North Georgia, Lander and Mount Olive, and have a huge cushion for the No. 1 spot in the Southeast. That is obviously a huge advantage and also quite impressive with how many teams from that region have populated the Power 10 throughout the season. This team simply scores runs — the most in DII — and is a fine-tuned machine at this point.

No. 5 Florida Southern | Previous: 6. The hits — runs and wins, too — keep rolling for this impressive Mocs turnaround. This last weekend, they swept Palm Beach Atlantic and are locked into the second spot metrically in the South Region. Should Tampa slip a little, the Mocs could still gain the home-field advantage with last month's series win over the Spartans, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Right now, the Mocs are 12 wins improved from 2024 and we still have just about a month left in the season.

No. 6 Millersville| Previous: 7. The Marauders dropped a stunner to a Mansfield team I thought they would sweep, but this team is still plenty good. They are the top team in a crowded Atlantic Region and have a top-7 KPI in DII baseball. There is no room for error, however. Millersville closes the season against West Chester and East Stroudsburg on consecutive weekends, which will play a large factor in which team gets the No. 1 seed.

No. 7 Minnesota State| Previous: No. 8. Brace yourselves. The Mavericks lost a game this past week. However, Minnesota State played an unreal six games in five days — and its only loss was a Winona State ninth-inning walk-off. So, the Mavericks nearly went undefeated in a short window, which should be scary for the Central Region. This team is in tournament mode, and it literally takes every last at bat to beat them, as they are now 30-3 on the season.

No. 8 UT Tyler| Previous: No. 9. The Patriots are in an all-out war with Angelo State for the No. 1 spot in the South Central. Splitting the series with the Rams earlier this season doesn't help make things any clearer. This team scored 51 runs in a four-game sweep this past weekend, so nothing has changed in Tyler. This team is a ready for a postseason run and playing very well in all aspects of the game.

No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne| Previous: 5. The Southeast Region is loaded — there were seven teams in . So, that simply means there is zero room for big losses. That is what the Bears suffered this past weekend, dropping two of three to a Carson-Newman team that is either nationally ranked or receiving votes in all three polls. Still, the Bears have some of the best metrics in all DII baseball and that top of the lineup is absolutely insane.

No. 10 Young Harris| Previous: First five out. The Mountain Lions usurp their Southeast Region counterpart Catawba for their first Power 10 appearance this season. This is probably unfair, because Catawba still has the better metrics; however, I am rather impressed by the quality of wins Young Harris has since March 1, which includes series wins over North Greenville, UNC Pembroke, Mount Olive, Belmont Abbey as well as a midweek win over North Georgia. This team is facing off against potential tournament teams and winning.

First five out (in order)

  • Catawba. See above. This is probably still a top-10 team, but the midweek loss to Lenoir-Rhyne has the Indians just on the outside looking in.
  • Pittsburg State. The Gorillas are unstoppable right now, winners of 12 in a row. The cries that they played a soft schedule are now silenced as they have jumped to No. 2 in the Central Region and have a better KPI than Minnesota State. This team also just missed.
  • East Stroudsburg. The Warriors split a weekend series against Shippensburg, which is one of the more underrated teams in the country. They are in a battle with Millersville for the top spot in the Atlantic Region.
  • Westmont. The Warriors are back on track after a little mid-season skid and remain the top team in the West Region. They have won six in a row and are in a good spot to get to 10 in a row against Menlo this week.
  • Delta State, North Georgia. This was too close to call. The Statesmen had an up-and-down week, losing to a potential tournament-bound Arkansas-Monticello before taking two of three from Trevecca Nazarene. They still look like the team to beat in the GSC. The Nighthawks took another important series this weekend, sweeping Flagler, and played North Greenville tough in a midweek 14-10 loss.
