No. 1 Auburn falls to Texas A&M, BYU upsets No. 10 Iowa State for senior night chaos in men's hoops

AP poll breakdown: Andy Katz Q&A, reactions to college basketball rankings (3/3/25)

Two top-10 teams fell Tuesday night 鈥 including No. 1 Auburn 鈥 here's how it happened.

No. 22 Texas A&M upsets No. 1 Auburn 83-72 for senior night win

Texas A&M men's basketball

Texas A&M鈥檚 senior core had an extra reason to celebrate on senior night, upsetting No. 1 Auburn in Reed Arena for the program's first-ever win over an AP No. 1 team. The Aggies snapped a four-game win streak to bring down Auburn鈥檚 buzz after claiming the SEC regular season conference title just four days ago with a win over Kentucky.

Texas A&M opened the night on a 7-0 run and never trailed the rest of the game 鈥 even tallying a double-digit lead on several occasions.

Auburn suffered from a lukewarm offensive performance all night. Tahaad Pettiford and Chad Baker-Mazara were the only Tigers to reach double figures, with star center Johni Broome being held to just eight points on the night. Broome has only been held to single digits three other times this season.

With the Tiger starting five struggling, its bench was little help, as it produced only 10 points to Texas A&M鈥檚 36. The Aggies also outpaced the Tigers 41-25 in rebounding, which directly translated to Texas A&M producing 29 second-chance points to Auburn鈥檚 11. Texas A&M entered the game ranked third overall in the SEC for total rebounds and rebounds per game.

Five different Aggies reached double figures, with Zhuric Phelps headlining the group with 19 points on the bench, going 6-of-16 from the field. Wade Taylor IV followed with 14 points, three rebounds and two assists. Andersson Garcia recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Miles Kelly cut the deficit down to single digits for Auburn with a minute to go, knocking down free throws. The Aggies then sought to use up as much clock as they could, forcing the Tigers to foul and all but seal the upset with seconds left.

No. 23 BYU upsets No. 10 Iowa State 88-85 in double-overtime

BYU men's basketball

No. 23 BYU spoiled the senior night fun for No. 10 Iowa State with an 88-85 double-overtime upset, marking its first-ever win against the Cyclones on the road.

The Cougars took an early 83-79 lead in the second overtime period, but the Cyclones fired back to come within two points of BYU at 85-87. The Cougar defense then forced an Iowa State shot clock violation, which sent Dallin Hall to the line after the Cyclones were forced to foul to save time. Hall knocked down one to hand the Cougars the upset.

Hall and Egor Demin combined for all of the Cougars鈥 overtime offense, going for six and five points, respectively. BYU was able to succeed even with 29 turnovers on the night, which the Cyclones converted to 34 points off turnovers.

Richie Saunders headlined the Cougars with 23 points and five rebounds, going 13-of-13 from the free throw line. Hall followed with a total of 22 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Cougars also maintained control of the glass, going for 52 rebounds to Iowa State鈥檚 24, with 15 rebounds from Keita Keba.

Iowa State shot just 39.1% from the field and 28.6% from 3-point range on the night. Four of its five starters all reached double figures, but it wasn鈥檛 enough to make up for its lack of execution late in the game.

Also worth mentioning:

No. 25 Mississippi State fell to Texas at home in overtime, 87-82.
